USIT's partner and your US sponsor are CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange). They are based in Portland Maine and they have been designated by the US Department of State to operate this programme. CIEE issue all DS-2019 Work Authorisation Documents on behalf of the US Dept. of State for our Summer J1 Work and Travel participants.
As the largest and most experienced US J1 Sponsor they are well placed to provide the highest level of support services for all USIT participants after arrival in the US.
CIEE – Contact details
CIEE is available during business hours (Eastern Standard Time), Monday to Friday, to answer your questions, and 24 hours a day for emergency situations.
All participants are required to complete an in-person USIT/CIEE orientation in Ireland and a CIEE Orientation online via an e-mail link before they depart on their J1 Visa. This is a U.S. Government mandatory requirement for the programme. The orientation is extremely beneficial as it gives information on how to apply for your Social Security Number, SEVIS Registration, information on the monthly monitoring survey, registering your US summer Job with SEVIS/CIEE etc. Failure to complete the orientation before departure will result in the participant’s cancellation from the programme. Full cancellations fees will apply in these cases.
What is SEVIS?
SEVIS stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). SEVIS is a computerised system used by The US Department of Homeland Security to collect, maintain and manage information about international foreign students and exchange visitors during their stay in the USA.
SEVIS tells the U.S. government where you live and work, and your legal status on the Work & Travel Program.
All participants must register their details in SEVIS within 10 days of their DS-2019 start date! You must also register any change in address while you are in the US. Registering with SEVIS is VERY VERY simple. You simply register (during business hours) via CIEE’s Free Phone number (within the USA) 1-888-268-6245.
Getting your US summer Job vetted and approved by CIEE
CIEE vets the employment of all our participants according to the regulations of the J-1 Work & Travel USA program. CIEE cannot approve employment if there are questions about the safety and well-being of the participant, or if the nature of the employment prevents the participant from having a meaningful cultural exchange experience in the United States.
US summer Job Vetting Procedures
- You can download the USIT/CIEE Job Offer Form from your personal J1 tracking screen, just click on the ‘Downloads’ icon to see the form.
- Ensure both you and your potential US Employer complete all sections on the form
- Email a copy of the completed form to USIT – email@example.com
- Advise your US Employer that CIEE will be in contact within a few days to confirm the position and request additional information such as a copy of their Business License and Workers Compensation.
Please note: Vetting and approval processing timeframes can vary as the process heavily relies on the US Employer co-operating and submitting documents quickly to CIEE. USIT nor CIEE can be held responsible for any delays or job rejections due to non-compliance/delays of the US Employer.
- Once you are notified by CIEE your US summer Job has been approved you can begin working.
Applicants CANNOT begin working until their summer job has been approved by CIEE. Failure to abide by this programme regulation can result in your visa/sponsorship being revoked and your immediate return to Ireland. A revoked visa will have a negative impact on all future visa applications to America.
As a reminder, all second jobs must be vetted by CIEE before participants start work. You must contact CIEE before starting any second job in order to get approval.
If you locate a potential summer job in America and are unsure if it is suitable for the Summer J1 USA Work & Travel programme please contact USIT at firstname.lastname@example.org with your job description, etc. If you are already in America on your J1 visa please contact CIEE on 1-888-268-6245 (US FREE Toll Number) with your job description.
Mandatory Monthly Survey
US Department of State require all Summer J1 Work and Travel Applicants to keep in regular contact with their US Sponsor throughout their stay in America.
Due to the new regulations released in 2012, CIEE send all applicants a monthly survey via email(June to September inclusive) . It is a mandatory requirement for ALL applicants to complete the survey within the given timeframe.
Failure to complete each monthly survey will result in your visa/sponsorship being revoked and your immediate return to Ireland. A revoked visa will have a negative impact on all future visa applications to America.
